Before we take a look at the Bollywood celebrities who became parents using unconventional methods, here are two celebrities who expressed their desire, in recent months, to become parents.
Karan Johar becomes proud father of twins (through surrogacy), Bollywood showers blessings
Filmmaker Karan Johar became a father (of twins) through surrogacy, he has has named his daughter Roohi and his son Yash, after his late father Yash Johar.
“I’ve already started imagining things like your first day at school, your first words and even your first acknowledgement of me. To tell you the truth, every single day I whisper ‘papa, papa, papa’ into your ears because I’m petrified that your first words will be in Malayalam (all our four nurses are from Kerala!)
Filmmaker Karan Johar wants to become a parent, but doesn’t know how it’s going to happen
Filmmaker Karan Johar says he has a lot of love to offer and would like to be a parent someday. “I would like to be a parent. I don’t know in what capacity, I don’t know how it’s going to happen, I don’t have answers to those questions. But I do feel the need because I have love to offer,” said Karan.
During the launch of his book, “An Unsuitable Boy”, he said “Since it (love) is there, I would like to take it forward. I feel the paternal instinct needs to be acted upon. I feel there is so much within me and the love has to have a release, it is not going into a relationship, it goes to my mother, friends, company”.
The filmmaker says he realised his nurturing quality when he launched Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan in “Student of the Year”. I feel I have a nurturing quality in me. I saw that most when I launched Alia, Sidharth and Varun. I can’t let them go off even now. It has been nearly five years but I see myself staring at what they’re doing. Even for all those at ‘Dharma’. The emotion comes from a very strong paternal space.”
Manisha Koirala Wants To Adopt a Baby Girl
Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala, who battled cancer, and survived now wants to adopt a baby girl. Manisha, who has been cancer-free for over five years said “I just hope everything goes right and it all falls into place. I want to be there for the child, and I’ll make sure that I plan my life around this. I’m super excited about this new phase in my life, and I can’t wait for it to begin.”
On how she plans to raise her child, the Nepal-born actress said “I’ll pass on my wisdom and the lessons learnt out of life’s experiences to her. I’ll also teach her to appreciate the abundant beauty that lies in everything God has created”.

I proudly announce the arrival of my son, a baby boy, born last week through IVF and surrogacy. The baby, Laksshya, is in excellent health. I am thrilled to be a father! The paternal instincts in me have been overpowering my heart and mind for some time now. Therefore, I am thrilled beyond words to have Laksshya, now the greatest source of joy in my life. By the greatness of God and the excellent medical team at Jaslok, parenthood is an option for many, who choose to be single parents. Thanks to you all for your blessings & good wishes! 💙🙏🏻💝
Shahrukh Khan and Gauri Khan
The adorable AbRam Khan, Shahrukh and Gauri’s third child was given birth by a surrogate mother using IVF procedure. The family refused to discuss AbRam’s birth and although there were a few complications initially, AbRam is now a healthy rockstar just like his dad.
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao
Unlike Shahrukh, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao announced to the media, in the form of a letter, on the arrival of their son – Azad Rao Khan who was born through surrogacy using the IVF technique. In the letter, they thanked the miracle of science.
Aamir says he and wife Kiran had nothing to hide about having son Azad Rao Khan through surrogacy.

Famous yesteryear star, Mithun Chakraborty adopted a baby girl who he found lying helplessly in a garbage bin. He named her Dishani Chakraborty.
Sohail Khan and Seema Khan
It is believed that when Sohail Khan and Seema Khan wanted a second child – Yohan Khan they opted for IVF procedure. The couple still never cleared the air themselves and don’t divulge details on their experience with this procedure.
Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder
Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder were the first Bollywood couple to openly announce the birth of their triplets – Anya Kunder, Diva Kunder and Czar Kunder using IVF technology.
At the young age of 21, Raveena Tandon adopted 2 girls – Pooja Tandon and Chhaya Tandon. Chhaya recently got married in a beautiful Christian wedding.
Salim Khan, Salman Khan’s father, adopted his daughter Arpita. Arpita tied the knot as her Khan-daan gave her the wedding of her dreams.
Union Minister Sushma Swaraj was not impressed with celebrities opting for surrogacy. While she didn’t name any of the stars, she attacked “celebrities” on Wednesday who, she said, have made surrogacy “a fashion” and “shauq” (hobby).
She said, “We have many examples of celebrities who have their own children, still they have gone for a surrogate child,” she said. She alleged they opted for surrogacy as they “don’t want to put their wives in (labour) pain”.
These celebrities show us that when it comes to having children, it’s not about how they came into this world. Instead, it’s the love and life they provide to their kids.
