Talented actors need just one good opportunity to showcase their talents, and these are the movies where these actors got the opportunity to shine. Though they were cast as supporting actors, they were no less than the protagonist in those movies, and left the audience stunned.
While there are several movies out there in which supporting actors have done really well, we have shortlisted only those movie that had superstars in it, and where the other actors were not really expected to walk away with so much adulation.
For example, Priyanka Chopra had a supporting in Bajirao Mastani, but she being an international star, it was expected that she would get a decent role (else she may not have done it in the first place). Anupam Kher was brilliant in Saaransh, but the film didn’t have any big stars. Gangs of Wasseypur didn’t have big stars and had several good supporting actors (so its difficult to pick one or two from them).
So with that assumption, here’s our pick!
Vicky Kaushal – Sanju
Uri star Vicky Kaushal has been impressing everyone with his fantastic acting skills right from his debut movie. In Sanju, Vicky stole most of the scenes playing Kamli, Sanjay Dutt’s best friend in the film. His performance brought new life to the original character which was applauded by the audience as well as critics.
Siddhant Chaturvedi (MC Sher) – Gully Boy
Siddhant Chaturvedi (MC Sher) in Gully Boy is the friend that everybody needs in real life. In Gully Boy, Siddhant was no less than Ranveer Singh in terms of screen presence, acting skills.
Deepak Dobriyal – Tanu Weds Manu
Besides Kangana, Deepak Dobriyal (papiji) was the actor who impressed the audience in Tanu Weds Manu, with his comic sense and timing. I don’t think without Deepak Dobriyal, the audience would have loved the film as much.
Boman Irani – Munnabhai MBBS
Boman Irani impressed everybody with his comic skills in the 2003 Sanjay Dutt-starrer Munna Bhai M.B.B.S (directed by Raju Hirani). He went on to work with the top actors in movies like Main Hoon Na, Housefull, 3 Idiots, Don, and more.
Shahrukh Khan – Darr
While Shahrukh Khan is a superstar today, in the late eighties and the early nineties, he was still trying to establish himself. But he was the only hero back in those days who was ready to take risks and even ready to play a negative role.
One such movie was Darr (also featured Sunny Deol & Juhi Chawla). Shahrukh’s negative character in the movie made everyone sit up and take notice of the man, who would go on to become one of the biggest stars in Bollywood.
Annu Kapoor & Amrish Puri: Mr India
Sridevi was the reigning queen then and gave tough competition to even the male leads. Despite having Sridevi & Anil Kapoor in the lead, supporting actors like Annu Kapoor & Amrish Puri shone in the movie.
Annu Kapoor played Gaitonde, the nervous newspaper editor who’s always screaming at Seema, and Amrish Puri played the mercurial villain Mogambo.
Amjad Khan (Gabbar) – Sholay
The most successful film in the history of Indian cinema, Sholay had a multi-star cast including the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, but it was the villain of the movie who walked with the maximum accolades. It was none other than Amjad Khan who played the role of Gabbar Singh.
